Abstract

Nowadays, the research about entrepreneurial characteristics did not differ among business scale. However different scale of the business has different characteristics. The purpose of this research was to determine whether entrepreneurial characteristics-specific factors influence the performance of the small business.  A total of 221 questionnaires from Small Enterprises (SEs) in West Sumatera Province-Indonesia were used in this study. Purposive random sampling was utilized in selecting the respondents for the study. The Backward method in the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science version 23 was used. The study revealed that entrepreneurial characteristics contributed significantly to the business performance were age, education, innovativeness, pro-activeness and competitive aggressiveness. The most dominant factor was the innovativeness. Therefore it is recommended that there is a strategy to strengthen entrepreneurial characteristics to improve small business performance.
