Abstract

This study aims to describe the various values of character education in the short story Kupu-kubut Ibu, a reading material for Indonesian language learning as one of the character education strategies for students of SMP Nomensen Jambi. The research method uses descriptive qualitative research. Data were collected through discourse analysis techniques as well as questionnaire, interview and percentage techniques. Data analysis used flow technique from Miles and Habermans through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The data validity technique was carried out through triangulation of theories and methods. The research subjects as many as 25 are students of class VII. The results of the study show that there are five character values in the short story Kupu-but Ibu, the following is a description of the percentage of students' characters, which are as follows; (1) The character of curiosity, it appears that 96% have very high curiosity, 2.5% have high curiosity, and 0.5% have moderate curiosity. (2) Tolerance character, it can be seen that 92% has a very high tolerance, 6.6% has a high tolerance, 1.0% has a moderate tolerance, and 0.4% has an intolerance character value. (3) Hard work character, seen 87.5% have very high hard work character, 8.5% high hard work, 3.0% medium hard work, and 1.0% do not have hard work character. (4) The character of love for the environment, it is seen that 92.0% have a very high environmental care character, 4.5% high environmental care attitude, 2.0% moderate environmental care attitude, and 1.5% environmental care attitude, and there are 0.5% very indifferent attitude towards the environment. environment. (5) Peace-loving character, 97.2.0% has a very peace-loving or very high character, 2.5% a high peace-loving attitude, and 0.3% a moderate peace-loving attitude. The conclusion of the research is that there are five values of character education in the short story Kupu-but Ibu, namely; character of curiosity, tolerance, hard work, love for the environment, and love of peace. The picture of the student's character is seen above the average, which is a very high percentage. The short story of the Butterfly Mother deserves to be used as a source of character education for students.
